The History of Our Filmmaking

A life-threatening childbirth experience led Christy Turlington Burns to document the pregnancy and childbirth experiences of women in four countries in her film No Woman, No Cry. Following the release of the film and a subsequent maternal health awareness campaign, Every Mother Counts was born.

Since the founding of EMC, storytelling through filmmaking has continued to be an important and unique component of our awareness raising work. We have created films spotlighting the stories of women, communities, and providers around the world who face some of the most harrowing maternal health challenges, while also representing some of the greatest opportunities for change. Our films have inspired conversations and engaged hundreds of thousands of individuals in our mission to advance maternal health around the world.
